Ancient Egypt History

Egyptians have been riding camels, writing stories and building pyramids for more than 5,000 years. The ancient library of Alexandria was built in 246 BCE (Before the Common Era) - more than 2,000 years ago. Here is a short timeline of ancient Egypt and some links to help you learn about about this fascinating civilization.

Early Dynastic Period c. 3100 – 2686 BCE
  • Hieroglyphic script developed
Old Kingdom c. 2686 – 2181 BCE (3rd - 6th Dynasties)
  • King Khufu builds Great Pyramid of Egypt
Middle Kingdom c. 2055 – 1650 BCE (11th-13th Dynasties)
  • Pharaohs unite Egypt
  • Last pyramids are built
New Kingdom c. 1550 – 1069 BCE (18th-20th Dynasties)
  • Queen Hatshepsut ruled
  • Trade with Asia grows
  • King Tutankhamen ruled 1336 – 1327 BCE
Late Period c. 644 – 332 BCE (26th-30th Dynasties)
  • Persians conquer Egypt
  • Demotic script (Rosetta Stone) developed
Greek & Roman Egypt
  • Alexander the Great conquers Egypt 332 BCE
  • Ancient Library of Alexandria built about 246 BCE
  • Greek language/culture came to Egypt
  • Rosetta Stone carved 196 BCE
  • Ptolemy V ruled 204 – 180 BC (named on Rosetta Stone)
  • Cleopatra ruled 51 - 30 BCE
  • Roman Emperor Augustus conquers Egypt 30 BCE
  • Romans rule Egypt for more than 600 years
